An Australian start-up dedicated to streamlining clinical communications has doubled its reach after entering a partnership with Gold Coast Health.
Mobile communication and task management platform Medtasker will be rolled out for the after-hours staff at 700-bed Gold Coast University Hospital.
Medtasker, which was launched last year after co-founder Dr Andrew Yap became frustrated with the shortcomings of pager-based communication, has already been implemented at the Broadmeadows and Northern Hospitals in Melbourne, and Brisbane’s Redland Hospital.
After implementation, one hospital reported a 27% improvement in timely after-hours clinical reviews.
Yap said the reduction of staff during after-hours periods meant that a single doctor could sometimes be responsible for as many as 150 patients.
“Medtasker looks to solve this issue as it allows after-hours doctors to work together to help each other out, while providing medical and nursing leaders with visibility into the workload of junior staff to effectively redistribute work where needed,” he said.
“Hospitals that have adopted Medtasker have proven that the system increases patient safety and hospital efficiency without introducing new risk; we now have more than 30 hospitals considering Medtasker across the country.”
Medtasker’s automated escalations have been configured to work with Queensland Health’s policies for deteriorating patients.
Gold Coast Health Director of After Hours Dr Audra Gedmintas said the new platform would aid the hospital in distributing the workload equitably and safely between staff.
“Medtasker will allow us to prioritise clinical reviews and tasks that ultimately will allow us to see the sicker patients faster,” she said.
GCUH has signed a three-year contract, with the task management platform to be integrated into Queensland Health’s Enterprise Active Directory, HBCIS Patient Administration System and GCUH’s business intelligence systems.
