Clinical management software provider MedicalDirector has been named the second most innovative company in the Australian Financial Review’s 100 Most Innovative Companies list for 2018, with the company also taking out the top award in the Best Business Model Innovation category for its cloud product, Helix.

Announced this week, the dual recognition reinforces MedicalDirector’s position as a health tech industry leader.

“We’re honoured to be recognised by the AFR as one of Australia’s most innovative companies and excited to enable ideal health outcomes in Australia,” MedicalDirector CEO Matthew Bardsley said.

Also in healthcare, Deloitte came in at number ten for its hospital communications tool DeloitteASSIST, which allows patients – even those who can’t move or see – to make requests by interpreting their words into messages that display on mobile devices and clinical dashboards. The technology also lets patients know they have been heard and help is coming.

Other companies named among the diverse list of the most innovative in Australia and New Zealand have created tech solutions including AI that recognises the make and model of cars in photos, and blockchain and sensors that combine to identify where tuna has been sourced.

MedicalDirector’s Helix platform provides GPs with access to their patient’s health information on any device in a secure, encrypted environment and allows information to flow within healthcare organisations and hospitals.

Bardsley said the prestigious nods are acknowledgement of the MedicalDirector team, which has collaborated widely in the sector to create a platform that provides greater flexibility, efficiency and security for healthcare providers.

“Our top ranking is a testament to the amazing work of our people who share the same passion and vision to drive better health outcomes. And we will continue to innovate, working closely with doctors, the government, patients and industry so that together we can make people healthier around the world,” Bardsley said.

MedicalDirector processes more than 70 million patient consultations every year across a growing network of doctors and healthcare providers, and operates Australia’s largest population health analytics and insights platform. The company handles 2.3 patient consults per second and 66 million pharmaceutical scripts per year.

This year’s 100 Most Innovative Companies list attracted about 1000 nominations, with the number one innovation named as mining tech company GroundProbe, which has developed a world-first geotechnical mine monitoring system. The submissions were judged by an expert panel assembled by the AFR and innovation consultancy Inventium.
